The slogan of Monroe, WI is “We Bring You Back”. About 90 minutes to the east is a restaurant that is unofficially known for the same. Ask around and you’ll find many an example of folks that say, “when I’m in Milwaukee, I’m going to get a burger and some custard at Kopp’s”.
If you have never been to Kopp’s, plan on sharing that burger. Kopp’s serves up “Jumbo” burgers, and they mean it!
There is no drive-through at a Kopp’s, so you’ll have to head inside to place your order. Lines are typically manageable, with the sounds of patrons ordering and waiting for their number to be called. Oh yeah, and the sound of the custard blending machines rolling in the background.
Not only does Kopp’s top this list of best burger, their custard is head-and-shoulders above their competition, one of them being…
Oscar’s.
Like Kopp’s, Oscar’s has three locations, all in the Milwaukee area. Now understand, we’re just coming off the winter months here in Wisconsin, so the drive through is where it’s been at for a while now. And, Oscar’s manages their drive through well. Waits are very reasonable. Staff is courteous, accurate, and efficient. The food smells great. It’s a challenge to make it home without running out of fries. Their burgers are delicious, yet Kopp’s gets the nod in this review due to the duality of the burger–custard review combo.
And then there is Culver’s. A mention of the Monroe, WI Culver’s made my eulogy to my father. It’s where we went to eat and talk about stuff. Now my grandchildren rave about this place. But I don’t.
My personal opinion is that for the same money I have much better options. At this restaurant chain I wait longer for my food – which is priced well above its value in my humble opinion. And don’t get me started on the drive through. Pro tip: never order food and custard at their drive through.
Not even in the winter. You wait, then pay, then receive your custard, then they give you a number and ask you to drive forward to park and
Wait some more. Oscar’s doesn’t do this to me. By the time I get home I’ve got significant melt going on with my custard order, which isn’t as good as Kopp’s to begin with. I cringe a little every time the grandkids get that delighted look on their face because it’s the toughest $25-30 bucks I’ll spend that day for two adults and two small children. Culver’s may have been special when it first opened in Sauk City, WI in 1984, but it has lost its luster in my book. One of these days, when I’m super-bored, I’m going to write a short story called, “Dear Culver’s, your food and service are no longer a premium brand but you’re still pricing it that way”. Perhaps I just did that here. And on that salty note, dear reader, we will close with the final ratings:
